I
am currently about to enter my final year of college as a Film Studies
major. These next two semesters are
going to decide which path my life will travel.
In my film career so far I have produced around twenty-five short films
including music videos and editing reels.
Lately, I have delved into computer editing/effects techniques and
animation. Although the film industry is
a competitive field, I have developed multiple career options to apply my
concentration upon graduation June 2014.
The
option that lies at the top of my list is to apply for an internship at Laika
animation studios located up in Portland, Oregon. They have produced animation films such as
Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline.
I hold the upmost respect for this company and would be honored to join
their team. Not to mention Portland
sounds like an amazing city surrounded with beautiful nature. I like that they are cyclist friendly as I
ride my bike to and from school everyday and would like to continue this
practice. I plan to work on my animation
portfolio and sending my application for the internship position in March.
A
second option that I am greatly interested in pursuing is to follow a friend,
Quaoar Power, I met through Youtube around the world and helping him produce
his nature documentaries. He travels the
world and always seems to be in a new location every month. He is a talented host who knows the details
of just about every creature, big and small.
We came into contact about four years ago when I sent him a couple
homemade soundtracks to use in his videos.
His video production is amateur however, so after I graduate I would
like to team up with him and be his video assistant. With the combination of his biology skill and
my video skill we could make a successful nature show.
A
third option I have always considered is to produce a feature length film of my
own. My high school friend, Kyle Kimple,
and I have developed an innovative film idea that would be budgeted for fewer
than 10,000 dollars. We have already
finished the script. The plot is about a
party on a large estate where a small group of the party members begin to
isolate and murder victims. It would be
filmed in first person like Project X, Cloverfield, or The Blair Witch
Project. After completing this film I
would bring it to festivals in hopes to receive attention from major
distributing companies. We have been
strongly considering doing this because we love to make movies together and
this film idea would not require a large risk involving money and time. We practically have all of the materials and
actors to make this project; all we would need is some professional film equipment.
My
last option of choice is to move to Los Angeles and join my cousins on their
production company. They have been
working out there for about five years now, MAD TV being a show on their
resume. Right now they are developing a
production company mainly based around Youtube videos. They said that they would be more than happy
to hire me. They are great kids and, although
I am not a huge fan of LA, the city would have a lot of opportunities to offer
me.
Life
has been moving pretty fast and I am excited to finally have my first year out
of school and working on a professional career.
I plan to take risks while I am young and single. I would always rather try and fail then to
sit back in fear. Experiments create
experience and with more experiences comes more opportunity.
This scholarship
would greatly help me because my family has struggled with money the past two
years. It would be nice to have extra
cash so I would not have to dedicate precious hours of my senior year working
to pay rent. Thank you.
